MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -March 19 is National Agriculture Day, and in Mississippi, it is important to celebrate and thank the people who work in the agriculture field for all of their hard work.

Mississippi’s largest industry is agriculture, with poultry, soybeans, and forestry taking the top spots.

According to the Mississippi Department of Agriculture, this industry employs over 17% of the state’s workforce.

News 11 went out to learn why agriculture is so important in our daily lives.

“I think the most important that people think of just day-to-day is their food and you know where that comes from and what they’re consuming. Without agriculture, we don’t have clothes. We don’t have food. I mean, there’s so many aspects of agriculture that just surround our day-to-day lives,” said Extension Agent, Meribeth Boland.
