There’s a higher risk for car crashes during the solar eclipse week | News [Video]

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV)— A study just published by JAMA Internal Medicine shows that there’s a higher risk for crashes surrounding the days leading up to and after the eclipse.

The study used data from the 2017 Great American Eclipse. It showed a surge in crashes on the days before and after the eclipse.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson says this can happen due to the large crowds that are expected. 

“Tempers can flair and poor driving behavior can be exhibited by folks who feel like they’re running late, or not going to make it to their event on time,” says Sheriff Robinson. 

The path of the April 8th solar eclipse is within driving range to over 200 million people in the U.S.

Our Tri-State region is expected to draw anywhere from 50 to 80,000 visitors.

With unfamiliar roads and construction, there’s a higher risk for distracted driving.
