TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) held a special event honoring nine Indigenous students for cultural, academic and community involvement.

The event was an honor dance at Memorial High School Veterans Arena, near 61st and Yale.

“The Indian Education program and the Tulsa Indian Affairs commissioners, we join together and we select nine students, as I mentioned before, that excel academically, culturally, community involvement, those students are selected and we honor one student from every high school,” said Shari Williams, the Indian education coordinator for TPS.

The event had singers, dancers, drummers as well as a dinner.

“The community has come out to support us, the drummers, the singers are giving their time to come out because they feel education is really important,” Williams said.

Williams said it was the first dance they’ve had in years and everyone was excited.
