Lithium demand has surged recently, prompting exploration beyond traditional sources like pegmatites and volcanic clays.

A team led by researchers from West Virginia University (WVU) is investigating whether past industrial activities, such as mining operations, could offer untapped lithium resources without creating new waste.

The results of their study indicate that organic-rich shale might hold promise for increased lithium recovery due to the intriguing interplay between lithium and pyrite.

Under Professor Shikha Sharma’s guidance, the WVU’s IsoBioGeM Lab team will unveil the team’s discoveries at the upcoming European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2024.
