UNMC proposes on-campus apartments to meet student demand [Video]

The University of Nebraska Medical Center wants to bolster its on-campus housing options by building a six-story apartment building on the northeast corner of its Omaha campus.

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, UNMC’s chancellor, will present a proposal for the structure, which would be situated southeast of 39th Street and Dewey Avenue, to the NU Board of Regents at its regular meeting Friday.

The new building would have market-rate studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. The university would use an internal lending program to finance the nearly $66 million structure.

The project is being driven in part by a survey of the UNMC student body in fall 2022 to assess the need for on-campus housing. In it, nearly 77% of participants indicated that finding affordable housing near the campus was difficult.

Gold called the results a “clear demand signal” from students that they need more housing on campus.

“We think we can deliver that,” he said.
