BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – The State Department of Health has announced changes to the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children, otherwise known as WIC.

The new rule increases the amount of money available to low-income families to purchase fruits and vegetables.

It also allows more flexibility to select foods from a variety of cultures.

According to a release, the new rule by the US Department of Agriculture is designed to align more closely with dietary guidelines for Americans, as well as recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, And Medicine.

Additional changes to the rule include smaller package sizes, more substitution options, and increased access to whole grains.

This change comes during the 50th anniversary of the program.

For more information about the program and to apply to benefits, families can call their local WIC clinic.
