JUNEAU, Alaska (KTUU) – With less than 30 days left in the legislative session, a flurry of bills passed out of the state Senate on Monday.

On this Earth Day, Alaska senators unanimously passed a bill supporters say could one day lower power bills.

Bill sponsors said Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, said SB 152, will increase options for renewable energy development, allowing ratepayers to lower their electric costs and offset natural gas usage by establishing a virtual net metering program.

“If it’s really sunny in the summertime, you will probably save some money — in fact that you may have an excess of energy that you get which you then put back into the system,” Wielechowski said. “The electrical grid system that’s called net metering. But let’s say you have so much energy that you want to power not only your house but maybe another house next door to you, or let’s say you live in an apartment complex.”
