How to help your pets during spring allergy season [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Allergy season is in full swing, and while some of us may be feeling the effects, so are our furry friends.

“It definitely is allergy season for dogs this time of year. The most important thing is to notice it,” said Nikolas Schoonmaker, the associate shelter veterinarian for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

According to Nationwide Insurance, allergies are the most common reason for vet visits and are typically skin allergies.

“We might see sore skin, sometimes actually itchy, like they’re actually scratching. But sometimes we see something that may be something people don’t associate with allergies, say licking their front feet, ear infections,” Schoonmaker said.

We might be sneezing, itching, or coughing when our allergies act up.

But for our pets, allergies can be harder to detect.

If left untreated, these symptoms can create secondary for our furry friends.
