FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – Electric vehicles, also known as EV’s, are becoming increasingly popular on roadways so it is important to acknowledge certain safety practices. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is raising awareness about EV fires by introducing free resources and guidelines.

The International Energy Agency says EV sales rose to over 10 million in 2022 and is continuing to grow. Meanwhile, concerns are also growing amongst buyers due to the fire safety risk. Electric vehicles run off of lithium-ion batteries which are known to be reliable and popularly used, but questionable when it comes to safety.

“It is widely known that electric vehicles provide environmental and cost-effective benefits,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.
