JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville residents may see increased security activity and hear gunfire near Naval Station Mayport this week.

It’s all part of security exercises happening at the base from Monday to Friday.

Nearby citizens may hear blank rounds of “simulated gunfire” and could see slowdowns at base gates, an NS Mayport release states.

Exercise coordinators have taken measures to minimize disruptions to normal base operations and the scheduled exercises are not in response to any specific threat, according to the release.

The Command Assessment for Readiness and Training evaluates how personnel responds in different scenarios and to enhance the Navy Security Forces’ ability to mitigate threats, the release states.

The exercises will run from June 24 to June 28.
