King Charles III made a Pokemon reference during a state banquet held in honour of the visiting emperor and empress of Japan.

The close bond between the two nations was praised by the King in a speech, with Charles telling Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako their “shared values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law” were more important than ever.

He also joked that he hasn’t had “any better luck” with more recent attempts at fishing – referencing the time they spent fly fishing when they were younger.

“The Pokemon phrase ‘gotta catch ’em all’ may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me it is, perhaps, aspirational,” Charles said.
