Arizona Senate delays vote on ‘Secure the Border Act’ [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Senate was forced on Tuesday to delay a vote on the controversial Secure the Border Act, which would give Arizona voters the power to implement one of the strictest immigration laws in the country.

HCR 2060 would make it a state crime for migrants to cross over into the United States illegally. It’s modeled after a Texas bill that gives local police the power to enforce federal immigration laws.

But the vote will have to wait. Sen. Ken Bennett, a Republican from Prescott, said he would vote no on the bill unless changes were made. In addition, Sen. Justine Wadsack, a Republican from Tucson, wasn’t present for the vote because of a family emergency.

Bennett wants to keep protections in place for so-called Dreamers. These are children who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

Currently, Dreamers are protected from deportation under an executive order signed in 2012 by then-President Barack …
