Asylum seekers get respite in Tucson but supporters feel it could be brief [Video]

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – “Pinch me, I’m dreaming,” said the executive director for Casa Alitas, Diego Pena Lopez. “For the past several weeks, months we’ve been dreading April 1.”

But instead of dread, it was a typical Monday morning at Casa Alitas intake center on Drexel Road.

Families coming in, families going out. Children in the warmth and safety of the center that was scheduled to close Monday.

Instead, the children are playing games or showing off the bounty from yesterday’s Easter egg hunts rather than battling the cold and rain as victims of street releases on an atypical Tucson day.
