After the first cases of avian influenza, or bird flu, were recently found to have been transmitted from a cow to a human, officials are warning that there are more cases to come.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu was recently discovered to have infected a dairy farm employee in Texas. According to Johns Hopkins University, the virus has now spread to 16 herds in six states, including Missouri’s neighboring state of Kansas. Missouri Department of Agriculture Director Chris Chinn says that with the exception of a few cases, the state’s dairy herd is generally very healthy.
