Calera police chief disturbed by suicide numbers rising in Shelby County [Video]

CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) – Calera’s police chief said he’s shocked and saddened by the growing mental health crisis in Shelby County.

Chief David Hyche said the number of deaths by suicide increases each year.

Chief Hyche posted on Facebook numbers he calls disturbing – 47 people died by suicide in 2023 and so far, 14 in 2024.

He believes more needs to be done for young people and their mental health. He says it’s something that we talk about occasionally, but not enough action is being taken.

The Shelby County coroner says the deaths represent adults and young people.

Hyche believes social media can have negative effects on mental health causing more pressure and anxiety.
