Cedar Rapids bakery struggling as egg prices rise 2 years after 2022 bird flu outbreak [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The price of eggs is on the rise across the nation. It comes as the H5N1 virus, also known as bird flu, continues to spread across the country.

And one Cedar Rapids baker says she’s felt the burn.

As owner of the bakery Shawnniecakes, it’s rare owner LeShawn Smith isn’t in need of eggs.

“We do bake, but we also have a full breakfast menu that’s all day… so like, 5 to 8 dozen a week.” she said.

But when 2022′s bird flu outbreak struck, she struggled to meet the demand of her customers without breaking the bank buying them.

Now, two years later, she’s had to make adjustments to her menu to make ends meet.

“I just increased my prices a little bit because if we take just, not even eggs, but we look at everything, the cost of everything is going up.” said …
