The scholarship specifically benefits students with dreams from Uvalde, just like the young girl who it is named after.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Children often dream about what they will be when they grow up: a rock star, an astronaut or a firefighter, but many don’t make plans for how they will get there. 

Maite Yuleana Rodriguez did. 

Maite was one of the 19 students who was killed during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, 2022. 

The 10-year-old had a passion for sea life, and wanted TAMU-CC to be a part of her journey in becoming a marine biologist.

In a great example of beauty coming from tragedy, the Island University found out about Maite’s dream and reached out to her mother, Ana, to set up a scholarship in her daughter’s honor.
