LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Thousands of mint juleps are consumed during Derby Week, but where does all the mint come from?

All of the mint for the famous beverages comes from Nelson Family Agriculture in New Hope, Kentucky, in Nelson County.

The farm was run by Bill Dohn until his death in January. Now, Nick Nelson is the man behind the mint, keeping the farm going in Dohn’s memory.

“(Bill) Taught me pretty much everything that I know about it,” Nelson said. “The customer base and the demand for it is still there.”

Nelson said it isn’t an easy crop to maintain as you have to keep the weeds out. They have to maintain the crop throughout the whole year for it to be ready for Derby time.

“We’ve cut several thousand dozen. We cut anywhere from 300 to 700 dozen in a day.”
