New Jersey’s new state budget was once again rushed through the Legislature at the last minute, leaving virtually no time for lawmakers and the public to review a 373-page bill. And that’s drawing fire — again — from critics who call it an attack on government transparency.

Gov. Phil Murphy and other top Democrats downplayed the criticism at a Friday night news conference shortly after the record $56.6 billion spending plan had cleared the Legislature, saying most of the budget had been scrutinized for months in legislative hearings.

Progressive groups and Republicans, however, say this is becoming a bad Trenton trend.
