New Haven is moving to become one of the first cities in Connecticut to install red light cameras to safely monitor heavily traveled roads [Video]

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – The proposal to install red light cameras in New Haven got the green light this week from the Board of Alders.

The purpose is to try and stop drivers from speeding and running red lights.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and others believe this technology is much needed in the Elm City.

“We wouldn’t have to be installing them if people followed the law. There’s a reason why so many people are calling for more cameras, more speed humps, more traffic enforcement. That’s because people drive very dangerously in the city,” he said.

The cameras would be set up in heavily traveled areas that have seen a high number of crashes or near schools.

The intersection at College and George Streets will be where one of the 11 red light cameras and 8 speed safety cameras would be installed.
