Potential No. 1 pick JJ Wetherholt not focusing on pre-draft hype or projections [Video]

WVU’s star shortstop is blocking out the noise of where he might be taken in this summer’s MLB Draft, because, “I don’t know what’s going to happen, just as much as nobody knows what’s going to happen.”

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — As a youth baseball player, JJ Wetherholt wore the number one on the back of his uniform. He would later switch to the number 27, which has since become synonymous with him at West Virginia University.

His initial jersey number could be coming back into play this summer.

Players chosen with the first overall pick in the MLB Draft are symbolically awarded the number one jersey by their franchise. Images of recent top picks like Jackson Holiday, Henry Davis and Adley Rutschman donning the No. 1 uniform at their introductory press conferences and first visits to their new big-league ballpark will forever indicate the pick with which they were selected.
