Professor killed, 3 college students injured when rogue wave knocks into them during trip abroad [Video]

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – A community college professor from Tennessee is dead after a rogue wave in Brazil swept him away during a trip abroad last week.

Three students were also injured, but not seriously, according to the Tennessee Board of Regents.

The students were walking along a beach road when a rogue wave knocked into them, injuring all three students, and swept the professor away.

The students were taken to a local hospital but have since been released.

The professor, Clifford Gordon with Columbia State Community College, was confirmed dead on Monday following a search and rescue mission from the Brazilian military.

In total, 12 students from Tennessee community colleges were on the trip, including the three who were injured. Following the tragedy, they have arranged for early transportation home.

Gordan started at Columbia State Community College in 2008 as an adjunct professor in Humanities and Social Sciences.
