A new proposal in California is taking aim at various chemicals in processed foods like candy, cereals, and bread that have been linked to a higher risk of serious health problems. The state lawmaker leading the charge hopes this move will force manufacturers to find other non-harmful ingredients for their products. NBCs Dr. John Torres reports.

Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today questioned Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra in a Senate Finance Committee hearing to discuss President Bidens fiscal year 2024 budget proposal as it relates to HHS. Lankford pointedly asked Becerra what is being done about pharmacy benefitmanagers (PBMs) as they continue to push to keep their status as middlemen in the drug pricing scheme, which is forcing higher prices at the pharmacy counter for Oklahomans. Lankford also asked about the status of efforts to place generic drugs on the proper drug price tier instead of what is happening now where generics are sometimes placed on the same drug pricing tier as name-brand drugs increasing cost-sharing requirements for patients.
