KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Around 115 community members gathered at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza to “take back Earth Day” with demands for better, cleaner buses.
The Sunrise Movement KC says that on Saturday, April 20, 115 community members marched through the streets of Country Club Plaza to “take back Earth Day.” The organization demanded leaders at all levels of government enact the Better Buses for KC – a 6-point agenda to expand bus transportation.
The organization noted that the agenda aims to end the deadly impacts of vehicle pollution and “car violence” on the community’s health and safety. Members have demanded that the following actions be taken by 2025 for fast, reliable, green, public buses for everyone:
- Bus stops within a 10-minute walking distance of every resident’s home
- Buses will revolve on a 15-minute schedule and will always be on time
- Public mass transit will be supported by unionized jobs
- Transit will be 100% free to ride forever
