April 24, 1908 marks a tragic day in Alabama weather history. Numerous tornadoes touched down east of the Mississippi River. Watch the video for more insight. REVISITING WEATHER HISTORY Over 100 years ago, The Dixie Tornado Outbreak took place. At least 34 tornadoes ripped across portions of the Southeast from April 23 to April 26.Some of those touched down in Jefferson, Walker, Blount and Marshall counties. The first of these developed in the city of Dora and tracked east until it lifted in DeKalb County. This tornado was rated as an F4. According to the National Weather Service, the estimated tornado damage path was at least 100 miles long. The width of the damage path varied from around 200 yards to half-a-mile.Another storm produced a tornado that hit the city of Albertville in north Alabama. In addition to numerous homes being destroyed, a nine-ton oil tank was carried for half-a-mile. …
