‘Wokeness’. It’s come to be one of the defining culture wars of our time. A concept that’s evolved so quickly, the word has almost got lost in its own hype and the frenzy of debate surrounding it.
Its underlying meaning, however, has just been linked by one study to increased anxiety, depression and an overall lack of happiness.
So, what does woke mean?
The phrase originally comes from African-American Vernacular English, where it refers to being aware of discrimination and racial prejudice. As it became more well used online, ‘woke’ expanded to include a wider interest in and understanding of societal injustices including sexism, racial injustice and the denial of LGBT rights.
Soon, it became used as a catch-all term for all progressive political thinking and then something of an insult used by those that believe that social awareness isn’t exclusively a leftist idea.
Then ‘anti-woke’ became a pejorative …
