A bill that expands Alabama’s law that prohibits teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation to grades Kindergarten through 8th, passed the House Tuesday.
A state law passed in 2022 already exists and prohibits this topic from being taught in classrooms Kindergarten through 5th grade.
However, HB 130 initially sought to expand this ban to grades K-12. The bill’s sponsor, Representative Mack Butler (R), says some changes were made to help pass the bill through the House.
“There is really an epidemic of indoctrination, perversion that is being thrust upon our children at every level,” Butler said. “We originally were shooting for K through 12th, but we settled on K through 8th.”
