NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Shipping companies impacted by Tuesday’s bridge collapse are reaching out to Connecticut as a potential docking destination as they scramble to re-route cargo.
No one knows just how long the Baltimore Harbor will be impacted for what’s expected to be a lengthy investigation, but the Connecticut Port Authority said it’s already getting calls.
While no cargo ships have been rerouted up to Connecticut just yet, it very well could happen at some point, and the likely destination would be New Haven’s Gateway Terminal.
The Port of New Haven is already the second busiest port in New England, and it could soon become even busier.
“We’re getting inquiries from Baltimore and from those who have vessels either at the harbor or on their way to the harbor,” said Ulysses Hammond, Executive Director for the Connecticut Port Authority.
