CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — Chandler residents and those experiencing homelessness will have new places to cool down and unwind this summer.
The City of Chandler will open a day respite center and eight cooling locations starting May 1, giving people an option to recover from extreme heat. They will be open though Sept. 30.
Chandler City Council and the Maricopa County government approved the locations using $218,132 in American Rescue Act Plan funds. There is a possibility of additional funding and services at a later date.
As part of the agreement, Chandler will provide a day respite center located at the Salvation Army Chandler Corps.
The center will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. During excessive heat warnings, the center will open on Sundays. It will provide air-conditioning, hydration, snacks and a place for uninterrupted rest. Guests also will have access to restroom facilities, showers and laundry services.
