Child sexual abuse hides in secrecy and shame, Colorado victim advocate reacts to failed bill [Video]

DENVER (KKTV) – Colorado voters will not get the chance to weigh in on how long survivors of child sexual abuse have to seek justice through the civil court system when they head to the polls in November.

The Senate failed to advance SCR-001, a measure that would have asked voters to give lawmakers the power to change the state constitution to eliminate the statute of limitations for civil claims of child sex abuse.

Needing 24 votes, the bill failed on strict party lines with all 23 Democrats voting for it and all 12 Republicans voting against it.

Safe Passage executive director Maureen Basenberg said she is extremely disappointed in the result.

“The fact that they didn’t feel like they could trust us as citizens to look out for victims in our community was dismaying,” she said.

Basenberg said victims should have as much time as they need to come forward.
