CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston city council members approved a grant application request that will help fund preservation efforts of African American history in the city.
On Tuesday, the city council voted to approve a grant application request to help fund surveys of these historic properties to find and sustain them to keep the rich history of these properties for years to come.
This grant would provide $35,000 to the city’s initiative this plus the allocated amount provided by the city would expand their search to preserve African American heritage.
This would allow them to double the number of properties to survey.
This also makes up for some of those properties that were not surveyed in earlier efforts to double the number of properties that they will survey.
The Director of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability, Robert Summerfield, explained why the survey is crucial to tell the complete story of Charleston.
