GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Gadsden has reached a new agreement to sell the Sears building downtown. That building will be redeveloped into loft apartments.

Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford says transforming the look of downtown Gadsden starts one building at a time.

The City Council approved the sale for $50,000. Local Developer Caleb Campbell plans to transform the site with 24 loft apartments. Vacant for over 20 years, Mayor Ford says the building has been an eyesore on Broad Street and something needed to be done.

Planning to use the current building, the mayor says the new owner will be able to take advantage of the historical tax credits. With a housing problem in Gadsden, this new development will help with young adults moving back into the city.
