RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources gave Rapid City a $90,000 grant last month to support a new project.

Starting this month, contractors will remove dead and sick trees from neighborhoods in the North Rapid City area. The city’s Forestry and Landscape Supervisor, Jason Preble, says removing these dead and diseased trees can protect everyone from potential hazards.

“Those dead trees that are just sitting there waiting to fall—you know, they can fall into power lines or the streets or sidewalks, so getting rid of them is a safety issue, number one, and just the overall look of the neighborhood.”

For every tree they remove, two trees will be planted. The state of the city’s urban forests could improve if more trees are added than are removed. To see if you can get your tree removed contact the city’s Urban Forestry Department by clicking here.
