ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Decatur school crossing guard injured in a hit-and-run last September is back on the job.

The Decatur Police Department announced in a social media post Monday that Jeffery Smith had returned to work after recovering from his injuries.

“Welcome back Mr. Jeffery!” the department wrote. “We are so happy to have him back helping students safely cross.”

Police said a driver hit 69-year-old Smith on Monday, Sept. 11, while he was helping a Decatur High School student cross the intersection of East College Avenue and South Candler Street.

The driver, identified as 38-year-old Alrahman Heath, left the scene and was arrested on charges of hit and run and failure to yield to a pedestrian, police said.
