DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – After small appliances like microwaves and refrigerators were taken from Dothan City Schools teachers last week, people on social media are outraged.

DCS Superintendent Dr. Dennis Coe was eager to address recent concerns about the decision, as he told News4 this rule has been in place for years.

”We have had an energy management plan, to my knowledge back in 2010, and it includes a provision where we don’t allow small appliances in the classrooms. There are several reasons why, number one would be the energy usage provision embedded within the energy management contract,” the superintendent said.

Dr. Coe says each teacher is made aware of the rule from the time they are hired and throughout the school year.

However, Julie Mullins-Turner, a retired teacher who spent 13 years with Dothan City Schools, believes this move by the school system is the wrong thing to do.
