Dry, windy conditions spark two wildfires in northeast Kansas [Video]

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Dry and windy conditions across the state of Kansas prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency on Friday, and sure enough, several fires have ignited across the state.

As of Sunday night, the Axelton Hill Road Fire remained uncontained in Riley County. A change in wind direction Sunday afternoon prompted an evacuation order for many homes in the area as well as in neighboring Pottawatomie County.

State fire Marshall Mark Engholm warned residents to take the evacuation order seriously.

The fire started burning Saturday north of Turtle Creek Lake, and at last report was quickly moving northeast.

Mulvane Fire Rescue reported on Facebook that additional crews from Sumner County were heading out to join the fight.

Sedgwick County’s Wildland Taskforce has had crews out there helping in the fight since Saturday.

Just a couple of counties away, there’s a second uncontrolled fire in Marshall …
