Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) slammed Donald Trump for expressing concern about “election integrity” after the former president tried to overturn the 2020 election.
Trump held a press conference with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) at Mar-a-Lago on Friday amid a serious challenge to Johnson’s leadership in the House.
The speaker announced the House will take up an “election integrity” bill meant to address the kinds of nonexistent widespread voter fraud Trump claims occurred in the 2020 election, which the ex-president falsely alleges was rigged against him. For his part, Johnson echoed those claims in the weeks after the election and ultimately voted against certifying it.
“I’m going to announce to you today here, standing alongside President Trump, that we will do everything within our power to ensure that we do have free and fair elections in this country,” Johnson said at Friday’s presser. “If we don’t have that in a constitutional republic, we have nothing.”
