Flurry of bills pass House and Senate as session winds down [Video]

JUNEAU, Alaska (KTUU) – With a little more than a week left in the session, House and Senate lawmakers passed several bills on Monday, some of which deal with education, workplace violence, and worker shortages.

Passing with strong support, Senate Bill 28 — similar to laws in eleven other states — seeks to support workplace safety by providing employers with a streamlined process for addressing credible threats of violence.

Sen. Matt Claman, D-Anchorage, said his bill looks to speed up the process from several days to a single day for employers who file a petition for a protective order against an individual who threatens an employer’s establishment or employee.

“The procedure model for workplace protection orders in SB 28 is modeled after domestic violence protective orders. Protective orders are processed within 24 hours and are enforceable by public safety officers,” Claman said.
