STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — No one likes feeling like they’re in a sauna when they’re in their living room, and with high temperatures expected to slam New York this summer, a free air conditioner will definitely be a welcome sight.
That’s why Gov Kathy Hochul is helping low-income New Yorkers get air conditioners via a $22 million addition to the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
Overseen by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the federally funded program may provide eligible households with an air conditioning unit. To be considered, the household must include someone with a documented medical condition worsened by extreme heat, a child under the age of 6, or an adult over the age of 60.
Naturally, applicants must additionally meet HEAP eligibility criteria and income thresholds, which vary by household size.
