New York state is receiving nearly $158 million in federal funds to support a rebate program that will make homes more energy efficient.

It provides low-to-moderate-income homeowners access to $14,000 in rebates for home projects that boost efficiency.

Advocates say the high costs associated with these projects are keeping many people from upgrading things like electrical panels, wiring and insulation.

Potential savings include $8,000 off an Energy Star-certified heat pump for space heating and cooling, $4,000 off electrical panels and $2,500 off wiring.

“It was groundbreaking legislation that was passed a couple of years ago in the form of our climate act that really set the stage for us to really start to mobilize our resources towards decarbonization of homes and buildings throughout the state,” said Courtney Moriarta, director of single-family residential at NYSERDA.
