Goon Squad member appeals federal sentence: Could it violate his plea agreement? [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The highest-ranking convicted member of the Rankin County Goon Squad now wants to fight his federal sentence handed down nearly a month ago, though the actions could wind up violating the terms of his plea agreement with the U.S. government.

Former Rankin County Sheriff’s Office investigator Brett McAlpin disagrees with the 27 years behind bars that a federal judge doled out last month.

On Monday, he filed a notice to appeal the sentence to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals but has not yet filed any paperwork indicating why he’s challenging it.

McAlpin made the initial call that led to the beating and torture of two Black men, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, more than a year ago.

Prosecutors said he gave the orders during the hours-long ordeal, too.

McAlpin, as third in command of the sheriff’s office, was the highest-ranking officer of the six Goon Squad members.
