DES MOINES Iowa (KCRG) – A bill in the State House would change what civics and history educators can teach. House File 2330 includes requiring students to learn about things like the history and meaning of the U.S. flag and the national anthem.
It goes on to give specific curriculum requirements for different grades. For example, for fifth and sixth graders is requires the reading of documents such as the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, the Mayflower Compact and The Federalist Papers.
And the bill urges the teaching of civic virtues exemplified by people like Will Rogers and Ronald Reagan.
”My concern is that we’re going to marginalize entire sections of American history,” said Schuyler Snakenberg, social studies teacher.
House File 2330 would put standards into place for social studies curriculum, having students in grades one through 12 learn about “The United States’ exceptional and praiseworthy history”
