The primary runoff election will happen on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
BEAUMONT, Texas — Twelve weeks from now some Southeast Texas voters will be heading back to the polls for a runoff to decide who will win the primary election for the District 21 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, who became the 76th Speaker of the Texas House in January 2021, is in his fourth term as the state rep for district 21 and is now defending his seat against David Covey in a runoff election.
Covey is a former chairman of the Orange County Republican Party who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Ken Paxton, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.
Because no Democrat is running in the race, the winner of the primary election will likely run unopposed in the general election and win the seat.
