LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Five North Oldham Middle School students received a huge surprise on Tuesday — they won a national contest and a trip to New York City.

The seventh grade students were part of two separate groups that created a performance piece based on a historical event for a national contest. Both groups were named National Outstanding Performance winners in the national contest through The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

“It feels pretty good,” said Rosalie Yantis. “We already had a run at this and didn’t make the second callbacks. So it’s really awesome for us to be able to make it to New York.”

The students were told Tuesday morning that they’d be getting an all-expenses paid trip to New York City in May to see “Hamilton” on Broadway and explore the city.
