Important deadline for Colorados Universal Pre-K program is Saturday [Video]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – 11 News is talking with Colorado officials about the enrollment process for universal preschool as an important deadline is approaching.

UPK Program leaders say 35,000 children are already registered, which is more than half of the eligible population.

Saturday, April 20th is the first deadline for the first round of pairing families with providers. Enrollment opened in late February.

The program offers kids and parents up to 15 weekly hours of preschool care in the year before they start kindergarten at no out of pocket cost, though parents can get more care depending on their circumstances.

Families who register by the deadline will be notified by May 8th by the state regarding next steps. Officials say parents have one week to accept or decline once getting that initial pairing notification.

Program leaders say 15,000 new applicants have applied this year over last.
