ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Over the last year, those outside and inside the Fulton County Jail have been sounding the alarm about overcrowding and unsafe conditions inside the Rice Street facility.
“The jail itself is deteriorating, the walls are crumbling down,” one inmate testified at a Fulton County Board of Commissioners meeting in September.
Now, another inmate has died. According to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Edward Cherry stabbed 37-year-old Leonard Fortner multiple times.
Officials said Fortner was taken to Grady Hospital but died shortly after the attack.

“It’s time for them to do something about this. They can’t keep allowing these people just to sit here,” said Joel Whatley.
Whatley said his son has been sitting at Fulton County Jail for years and he worries about his health and safety inside the facility.
