IU says 23 arrested for encampment on campus during protests [Video]

The university says it has not confirmed if any students were among those detained.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University has announced the arrests of nearly two dozen individuals in connection with an ongoing encampment in Dunn Meadow. 

According to a release from the university, the IU Police Department and Indiana State Police responded to the encampment to tell the people that they were allowed to protest, but could not build temporary or permanent structures during the protest as it violates university policy. 

The protestors were reportedly given “numerous” verbal and written warnings to remove their tents and canopies that went up Friday night. 

Eventually, around 12:20 p.m., officers again gave six verbal warnings to remove the structures or face arrest. Roughly fifteen minutes later, 23 individuals were arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail for criminal trespassing and resisting law enforcement.
