FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) -Kentucky lawmakers are working to reverse action on some bills and pass others in the final two days of the 2024 regular session.
The Kentucky House took up nearly 20 bills vetoed by Gov. Andy Beshear Friday.
“We are taking away once again power that has always been in the executive branch of government,” said Rep. Derrick Graham, D-Frankfort.
Rep. Graham is talking about House Bill 622 which deals with actions when a U.S. Senator vacates office. The bill requires the Governor to call a special election and not appoint someone. Governor Beshear vetoed it, and the House overrode it 81 to 17.
“The people should decide who a United States Senator is by an election always,” said Rep. Steven Rudy, R-Paducah.
There was also some debate over who has the authority to place or replace statutes or monuments in the state capitol rotunda.
