TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – St. Benedict Parish Soup Kitchen has served the Terre Haute community for decades, providing a hot meal to those in need.
On Friday, the soup kitchen celebrated serving its one-millionth meal.
The soup kitchen hit the milestone after 43 years in business. Volunteers and the community celebrated with an open house reception.
It included a program of the soup kitchen’s history in the community and recognition of all the volunteers who have helped over the years.
“We’re hoping that the hunger situation will get better so the numbers we hope will go down, but they haven’t in the last 40 years so (we’re) here to serve,” said Terry Hogan, a member of the church’s finance committee.
On an average day, Hogan said the soup kitchen gives out between 150 and 200 meals.
