Mat-Su students put their hands on the pulse of local politics [Video]

WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) – What’s normally a high school science classroom at Mat-Su Career & Tech High School has been transformed into a hub for local government.

The desks have all been moved to foster a meeting of the minds and to mirror what an actual local assembly meeting would look like.

A pair of two-person classroom tables pushed together at the head of the room make up a dias, as the six-member Student Advisory Board sits facing the representatives of various schools across the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District.

Quinlen Schachle, the advisory board president, calls the meeting to order after a brief round of icebreaking.

It’s government at its most local level, as students from around 14 different borough schools gave school reports on current events and issues they’re facing — overseen by the board’s advisor and civics teacher at the tech school, Kristi Shea.
